Now everything created has first of all the purpose to serve as a spirit-carrier, but at the same time also to contribute to the preservation of the whole, because it is as it were one created for the other and necessary for the existence of the same. No thing in creation has been created completely without purpose, rather it will always mean a supplement in such a way that either one draws the life-force from the other or the work of creation corresponds to other needs, but has some purpose for the benefit or the preservation of the various creatures.
It should just be noticed that everything spiritual which animates this creation is not touched by the outer determination of the form enveloping it, that therefore quite irrespective of the earthly activity, everything spiritual is active in itself, while the outer form always contributes to the perfection of another form and thus remains equally continuously active in the earthly sense. What is taken from the earth for the growth of the plant is, so to speak, always the outer cover of some soul-substance, which is now taken up into the plant-world, brings about a new form there for this purpose, while the spiritual substance takes up residence again and again in the new form, multiplies itself through the soul-substance taken from the previous form and thus forms itself into ever greater beings, which likewise have their purposeful destiny in the whole of creation ....
