Subordination of the will .... liberation of the spirit ....

BD 1354 March 26th 1940

If the will of man subordinates itself to the divine will, then that transformation takes place in the soul of man which liberates the spirit. The transformation of thinking has now taken place, the will, which previously rebelled against the creator, has now become soft and submissive; the human being regocnizes the creator's wisdom and love, and he knows that only God's love ever determines every event, and thus he humbly submits to everything that comes upon him. And now the spirit is free, which was previously inhibited by the will striving against God .... A transformation of the whole person now takes place. To a certain extent, he now lives in a sphere that was previously alien to him .... The spirit within him gives him knowledge of his true home, and now that the human being's will is no longer an obstacle, he is also able to visualize this home, for he allows himself to be guided by the spirit that announces itself to him. The weak-willed human being can also be easily guided, both by good and bad power, but the weakness of the will does not contribute to the complete liberation of the spirit .... For the weakness of will is always utilized by the opposing power and strengthened in a God-resisting sense. The human being must submit his will to the divine will with full awareness .... This also requires a certain strength of will which turns towards God .... while the weakness of will makes the human being fickle but does not always decide in favour of God. Submitting one's own will to God will always involve a certain struggle, for man is far more likely to demand that which is opposed to the divine will. Thus, if he wants to serve God, fulfil His will and unconditionally submit himself to the divine will, he must be in constant battle with his desires, with himself and everything that appears beneficial to the body. Yet this constant battle with himself also leads him closer to victory .... Once he has succeeded in completely conquering his will and recognizing only the divine will, divine love gives him far more precious things than he has given up. He slowly slips from this earth into the spheres of the spiritual .... He regocnizes more and more the worthlessness of everything he has given up and the precious treasure he has now unearthed .... God Himself offers him something that cannot be acquired earthly in any other way. He imparts to him divine truth, profound knowledge and the highest power of realization. And so the human being begins a second life, as it were, which differs considerably from the previous one, earthly life recedes into the background and the love, wisdom and omnipotence of God is revealed before the human being's spiritual eye .... Man gains insight into divine activity and the meaning and purpose of creation becomes apparent to him. For when man has sacrificed his will, he has fulfilled the actual purpose of life. He has regocnized his origin from God and now no longer resists Him but turns to Him with full awareness and free will .... He has given up his resistance, which for millennia had caused the being to flee from God, and now seeks to achieve the final union with Him .... And thus the subordination of one's own will to the divine will is absolutely necessary for the soul's final redemption ....
