Hours of loneliness .... inevitable separation from the world ....

The hours of solitude are well suited to cause a person to reflect and he should therefore often seek the opportunity to escape from all earthly hustle and bustle in order to indulge in inner introspection, which can have a beneficial effect. In his arrogance, the human being often believes that he fulfils the demands God places on His earthly children .... i.e. he does not do the slightest thing to educate himself spiritually or to achieve a higher degree of maturity, i.e. to ennoble his nature. He believes that he was created by God as he is, and he gives himself no account of the extent to which he himself is responsible for shaping his nature. And he can only be enlightened about this if he subjects himself to critical scrutiny, if he compares his actions and thoughts with God's requirements, which He places on man through His commandments of love. Then his inner voice will reproach him for his way of life, or he will be made aware if his actions and thoughts deviate from what God wants .... And again, it depends on the extent to which he listens to the inner voice; it depends on whether he is prepared to contradict or willingly accepts the admonition of those who want to help him .... Accordingly, he will also adjust his further life, he will either endeavour to ennoble himself or try to drown out the inner voice with counter-talk that still expresses too much desire for the world. For the person who is still so attached to the world does not take the fulfilment of the divine commandments seriously in order to secure earthly advantage for himself. And so the earthly-minded person will also not be willing to go into solitude often, i.e. his soul does not long for hours of inner contemplation but seeks to numb itself and drown out the inner voice through the hustle and bustle of the world. And it is God's grace that He forcibly places such people in situations where they are exposed to loneliness .... It is true that the desire for the world can also arise in that person with increased strength and such loneliness can bring him no benefit for his soul; but often the person also comes to the realization of his useless way of life and returns to worldly life as a different person. Inner contemplation has brought him the realization that his previous thoughts and actions were not the right ones, and he tries to change himself and his nature and to pay more attention to his inner life, which he will also succeed in doing if his striving is serious, i.e. if his will remains turned towards right thinking. And so an apparent evil can often .... an inevitable separation from the world .... can often have an extremely beneficial effect, for when the earthly world has moved away from a person, the spiritual world can come closer to him; where earthly distractions do not influence a person's thinking, forces from the beyond can now take effect and, in the form of thoughts, enlighten a person about the actual meaning and purpose of life. And success in spiritual matters can fully compensate the human being for the earthly pleasures he was denied ....
