The human being lacks the right knowledge as long as he has not yet penetrated spiritual knowledge, for only this brings him closer to realisation. Earthly knowledge certainly contributes towards mastering earthly life and meeting its requirements, but it has not the slightest influence on the state of the soul, which should be given the same care as the physical state but which is taken more seriously in earthly life. Spiritual knowledge is the soul's nourishment, it is the only thing beneficial to the soul which gives it strength for the task of life. Anyone who cultivates spiritual knowledge need not worry about his soul, for it will then sufficiently receive what it needs for higher development, whereas earthly knowledge again only brings success to the body and favours an earthly life of well-being.

The human being must be aware of the fact that all endeavours in earthly life must nevertheless serve a useful purpose, and thus the true purpose of earthly as well as spiritual knowledge must be examined to see to what extent it corresponds to the human being's desire and is therefore worth striving for. Earthly knowledge contributes to the increase of earthly well-being, but the latter is the greatest danger for the soul if it takes the body's desire into account, thus wants, feels and thinks what increases the body's well-being. The danger of the soul lies in the spiritual standstill which inevitably occurs when the body alone is respected. But the body only has a short duration of existence, afterwards the soul stands empty and without merit at the gate of eternity, and unspeakable agonies are the consequences of the wrong will, of the striven for earthly knowledge, which does not bring it the slightest relief in the beyond.

However, anyone who strives for spiritual knowledge already achieves a high degree of maturity on earth, for the spiritual knowledge imparted to him impels the soul to care for its higher development. It does not pay attention to the body and constantly endeavours to use earthly life in accordance with spiritual knowledge, which will already earn it greatest success on earth and will be felt indescribably redeeming in the beyond. For to have spiritual knowledge means to penetrate God's reign and activity; it means to know God's flow of strength, God's love, omnipotence and wisdom, the emanation of His spirit, the purpose and meaning of all creation and the grants of grace which the human being can obtain if only he wants. The knowledge of all this is an impulse to consciously work on oneself; it makes the physical desire recede into the background and the desire for God become the purpose of life.

Spiritual knowledge therefore promotes the state of the soul and enables the human being to shape himself into a being of light already on earth. Spiritual knowledge first benefits the soul but does not leave the body unthinking either, for it will now also be given what it needs if the soul is thought of first and bodily desire is disregarded for the soul's sake. And the departure from this world will be an easy one and lead the soul towards eternal glory, for it will cross over with an inconceivable wealth, it will take all the treasures with it, as it were, which it acquired on earth through spiritual knowledge. It possesses something that can never be taken away from it again, and the entrance into eternity will mean happiness and eternal bliss for it ....
