The hours of solitude are certainly suitable to cause the human being to reflect, and therefore he should often look for the opportunity to escape all earthly hustle and bustle in order to indulge in inner self-contemplation, which can have a beneficial effect. In his arrogance the human being often believes that he meets the demands God places on His earthly children ...., i.e. he does not do the least to educate himself spiritually or to achieve a higher degree of maturity, thus to ennoble his nature.

He believes that he was created by God as he is, and he does not account for the extent to which the shaping of his being is his own responsibility. And he can only be enlightened about this if he subjects himself to critical observation, if he compares his actions and thoughts with God's demands which He places on the human being through His commandments of love. Then his inner voice will reproach him for his way of life, or he will be made aware when his actions and thoughts deviate from what God wants. ....

And again, it depends on how far he listens to the inner voice; it depends on whether he is prepared to contradict or willingly accepts the admonition of those who want to help him .... Accordingly, he will also adjust his further life, he will either strive to ennoble himself or also try to drown out the inner voice with counter-speeches which still express too much desire for the world. For the human being who is still so attached to the world does not take the fulfilment of divine commandments very seriously in order to secure earthly advantage.

And thus the earthly-minded person will also not be willing to often go into solitude, i.e. his soul does not long for hours of inner contemplation but seeks to deafen itself and drown out the inner voice through the hustle and bustle of the world. And it is a grace of God that He forcibly brings such a person into situations where he is exposed to loneliness ..... The desire for the world can indeed arise in that person with increased strength and such solitude will be of no use to his soul; but often the person will also come to realise his useless way of life and return to worldly life as a different person.

Inner reflection has brought him the realisation that his previous thoughts and actions were not the right ones, and he seeks to change himself and his nature and to pay more attention to inner life, which he will also succeed in doing if his striving is serious, i.e. his will remains turned towards right thinking. And thus an apparent evil .... can often have an extremely beneficial effect, for if the earthly world has moved away from the human being the spiritual world can approach him; where earthly distractions do not influence the human being's thinking, otherworldly forces can now take effect and enlighten the human being in the form of thoughts about the actual meaning and purpose of life. And success in spiritual matters can fully compensate the human being for the earthly pleasures he was denied ....
