The most significant moment in earthly life is the realisation of one's own weakness and the attention of divine grace. Man will never recognise the latter as long as he believes himself to be strong. Only the feeling of weakness makes him capable of making use of divine grace, i.e. he desires something which takes away his feeling of weakness, and he then recognises this help he feels as grace, as a gift, offered to him by God in love.

And this recognition is so significant for him because the human being, by asking for grace, also consciously establishes the connection with God and this proves both his faith as well as his desire for God, which then certainly results in the soul's higher development. Divine grace is an aid to ascent, divine grace is also already the fulfilment of prayer, it is proof of God's love; and where this expresses itself the human being need not fear that he will ever be abandoned by God.

He need not fear spiritual decline, but he need not fear earthly either, for the appeal for divine grace will never go unheard, and standing in divine grace the human being will overcome everything. For divine grace is strength which God bestows upon people without their merit. Divine grace is not distributed according to worthiness but all people can receive it without restriction, they only have to desire it and therefore ask for it.

But grace cannot be distributed without being asked. God will only ever draw people's attention or try to encourage them to desire His grace, but He will never bestow His grace upon people who never believe they need it. These people are self-conceited; they don't know that they are nothing if God wants them to be, but they believe that they can master everything in the world by themselves. God has to show His strength to these people, He has to make them helpless so that they will now call upon Him for His grace, for then He will impart it to people and only then will the human being begin to mature in his soul.

But before that the walk on earth was without great spiritual success, even though the human being certainly found earthly joy and physical satisfaction. Only what is useful for the soul has lasting value, but not what the body desires and receives. And if the human being always and constantly asks for grace, the influx will never dry up, and living in divine grace brings the soul an inconceivable blessing and is therefore the first and most important thing that has to be recognised. For only now does the human being consciously work on his soul if he continuously requests divine grace so that it can flow towards him without measure ....
