So life will always mean activity, while death is the state of inactivity. However, inactivity does not necessarily have to have an external effect as long as the human being remains on earth. The liveliness of the spirit is not obviously recognisable, but it rather appears as if the human being is exceptionally active, who does not bother with spiritual work.

But this activity is only related to the earthly activity, to that which should only be the secondary work. Earthly activity can indeed also be beneficial, but it is valued at zero if spiritual striving is not connected with it at the same time. Earthly work must first contribute to freeing the spirit in the human being, and this can only be achieved through activity of love. Hence, what the human being does out of the desire to help, both earthly and spiritually, are works of love which give the spirit the longed-for freedom, which thus help the hitherto dead to live. ....

However, any work which does not have the purpose of spiritual redemption, which therefore merely applies to maintaining or improving earthly, i.e. physical life, is, despite apparent activity, completely without influence on the development of the spirit, and since earthly life will soon be gone, the result is precisely the state of inactivity from which the being can no longer liberate itself as on earth but requires loving help. A being first has to let its love become active on this lifeless soul in order to supply it with strength .....

The lifeless being itself must be willing to become active where it can help through love .... only then will the lifeless awaken to life, only then will the dead state be overcome, only then will the being enter into actual life .... because only activity of the spirit is life ....
