"Remember the poor in Spirit ...."

You should constantly plead for the gifts of the Spirit, as you are called to receive them - and what the Lord grants you in His love, you should receive with gratitude, so that you make yourselves worthy of His love.  And so He especially urges you to think of the poor in spirit, who are starved of spiritual food and to whom the bread of heaven can only be given sparingly, because they do not ask for it.  The soul is deprived of spiritual food and remains in the most meager condition, and yet it can only be redeemed from this condition with Divine help, and so you should now bring this help to it by imparting the Divine gift from above, by sharing the bread of heaven that you receive with these poor and by taking care of their need.  You shall give as you have been given, willingly and with the intention of helping them ....

With all patience you should impart your knowledge to them and make it your business to feed and water them at any time.  And they will thank you, and their condition will be unspeakably freer, because the spiritual food is at the same time the means to liberate them from their fetters.  If they receive it, they will free themselves from the bonds of darkness, because spiritual food is light and freedom .... Spiritual food is strength, grace and help in the struggle for perfection.  And therefore you should constantly ask for it and not let the soul starve, because you are entitled to it in unlimited measure, and all your desire should be directed to stand in the grace of God and to receive food and drink from Him, so that the soul will be relieved and will reach the goal. ....
